SAMBANA CERAMICS is a new venture by well-known potter Catherine Hall (née Fender). She and husband Geoff have been working on their home and studio for some time now and it is finally ready for use – by them and by you.

The studio is an ample space where Catherine will be giving classes to a number of selected students wishing to improve on their knowledge of ceramics and pottery – and to those wishing to start from scratch, whose fingers and heart are itching to get creative.

Catherine is an Honours student, graduating from the University of Westminster in Harrow, obtaining her Masters Degree in Three Dimensional Design at the Kent Institute of Art & Design. She holds a P.G.C.E. (Postgraduate Certificate in Education).

The daughter of Pat and Homer Fender, both painters of renown, Catherine set up and ran her own ceramics workshop in Andalucía in the early 1990s, where she designed and produced thrown domestic ware and ‘one-off’ decorative vessel forms.

After that she became the pottery tutor at Greenhill College, Adult Education Centre, in Harrow, and then at the Haimo Adult Education Centre in Greenwich.

Most of her more recent work uses slab and slip casting methods.

Her studio, in the quiet fields outside the lovely village of Jimena, contains all the necessary equipment -including two kilns of different types- for all kinds of work to be produced.

At present, plans are to offer students in the Campo de Gibraltar the opportunity to learn, to design and create their own work.

Formerly known as The Translation People, TranslationHELP is part of the International Translators Network, with translators all over the world able to translate from and into almost all known languages. The difference is that it is people at their desks, native speakers all, who do the work, as opposed to the innumerable ‘machine’ translators that are available online today. Have you ever tried using one of those? Here’s an example taken from a ‘translation service’ chosen at random:

ORIGINAL in English: At about 1pm the man, whose identity and age have not been released, was seen to carry out several turns in the air, but his kite was climbing higher than usual.

TRANSLATION into Spanish: Aproximadamente 1pm que vieron al hombre, cuya identidad y edad no se han lanzado, para realizar varias vueltas en el aire, pero su cometa subía más arriba que generalmente.

TRANSLATION back into ‘English’: Approximately 1pm that saw the man, whose identity and age have not been sent, to realise several returns in the air, but its comet raised more above than generally.

The secret to good, healthy food is in the making. To make it, you need good ingredients. To get good, healthy, fresh ingredients, you pretty much have to shop daily for the essentials. In Jimena at least, this is not difficult.

We are told by nutritionists all over the media that we need to eat more fruit and vegetables, aren’t we? This is where we can buy them:

The little shop across from the municipal swimming pool in ‘downtown’ Jimena. It is run by Manoli, who buys her fruit & veg herself. The freshest deliveries come on Mondays and Thursdays, and therein may lie the secret.

Of course, Manoli doesn’t offer just fruit & veg. It’s the kind of place where you can buy the last minute oh-I-forgot kind of thing without having to queue at the cashier. (And parking’s often easier than at the supermarket, but don’t tell anyone.)

If your hungry teenager is on the way to school but forgot his/her bocadillo, Manoli will make one up quickly with oven-fresh bread.  A happy teenager, that.

There is a good selection of Spanish cheeses, too, including a wonderful goat’s cheese called Payoyo (comes from the payoya breed of goat), as well as embutidos (sausages of various descriptions).

‘The Bomb Factory’ is a name that hardly conjures up a sense of peace and tranquility. But that’s only because this beautiful house was originally built, in 1779, as an artillery factory making cannons and cannon balls (never ‘bombs’!) that were used in Spanish America and during the Siege of Gibraltar. It’s very different now.

The main house sleeps six, the Ground Floor West Wing has room for four and the First Floor West Wing, for another four.

The Main House has spacious gardens and a safe swimming pool, while the West Wing has a secluded walled garden and a large oval swimming pool. There are a total of 3 barbecue areas, for dining together or separately. Lots of options to suit your needs.

Accomodation is flexible. Tell us what you need and we’ll do our best. All apartments are self-catering, all have bathrooms, some en suite, some not.

There are indoor and outdoor living- and dining-room facilities in or connected to all our apartments. Kitchens and bathrooms are provided with all you could possibly need for the break you need.

Above are only three of the many species of birds practically outside your window. Take a walk along our river and see Blue Rock Thrushes, Herons, Booted and Short-tailed Eagles, among many others. Lounge by the pool and watch Griffin Vultures soaring above the craggy landscape.

Take a walk, wherever you like

We can supply maps for you to explore many beautiful spots in the area – or arrange for a guided tour. Treks are often signposted, however, with little pottery signs, as above. Nature is at the doorstep: wild flowers, lizards, terrapins, butterflies, geckos, you name it and its probably waiting for you.

Railway up the mountains

One of the things we highly recommend is a train journey up the mountains. The trip to Ronda is a must: straight there for a visit to a fascinating town, or stop off at any number of little villages on the way, have a short walk, a leisurely lunch at a variety of excellent spots – and catch thee next train back. Easy and relaxing.

Riding into the countryside

A marvellous way to se the countryside. We can arrange for up to five people to be taken on rides around the area. Riding experience is not essential. Most rides are two hours or more, and cost €16 per person, per hour.

La Vía offers traditional Andalusian fare, but specializes in fish and seafood (to order). The summer terrace, above, is the place to try their T-bone steak, or lamb, charcoal-grilled on the spot, specially on a cool summer evening.

The air-conditioned indoor dining room is ready for a simple meal or a larger celebration. A favourite spot for a business lunch that can include traditional trotters or oyster plant stews selected from a carefully chosen menu. And the home made desserts are worth a try.

It is a good idea to make a reservation as La Vía can get pretty busy. On the other hand, you can call them (phone below) to find out what tomorrow’s specialty fish or seafood is. And they will be happy to prepare any kind of rice dish you fancy if they have some notice.

The name of this unique place just on edge of Los Ángeles (formerly Estación de Jimena) could be a little misleading. It means Bird Park, but there are many more animal species to see.

Aside from peacocks, white swans and black ones and all sorts of birds, you will also find Thomson’s Gazelles, and Ñandus, Emus and Ostriches, transcontinental cousins, too. And Watutsi cattle and Patagonian hares, zebras and mountain goats, even a children’s petting zoo, plus a lot more to learn about from the guides that will give you a tour. (See more pictures here)

You can take a tour (weekends only without booking) or stay all day, including lunch (booking required). Or you can have a party, even a wedding. Or you can plan a weekend break, staying at one of several charming cottages. Whatever you choose, it will be something different that you are sure to enjoy.

Now under new management, this large, ancient house was converted into the most charming of places to stay; Casa Grande means Big House in Spanish. With plenty of space and corners to explore, including a reading room at the top of the building, quiet indoor courtyards and a summer terrace, this posada (inn) is at the very top of the village. Close to the great outdoors but also to shops, bars and restaurants with a distinctive Spanish flavour.

Now managed by Carmen and Alfonso (of Mesilla Los Ángeles fame), La Casa Grande is open again for short or long stays, for singles, couples or groups.
