El Antiguo Juzgado

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

The prettiest street in the village.
El Antiguo Juzgado is on the right.

El Antiguo Juzgado (The Old Courthouse) is one of the distinguishing landmarks of Jimena de la Frontera, sitting right next to the main Plaza, and adjacent to the car park. The house offers the discerning visitor a unique opportunity to feel and share the history of Jimena through this most distinctive of buildings.

Built in 1738 on three levels, complete with the original Moorish lookout tower (pictures of two of four views above),  at one time or another it has served as the village’s jail, town hall, and/or police station. It is also believed to have been part of a convent or nunnery, which would account for its cloistered courtyard –  certainly a house with a history.

In its present guise, El Antiguo Juzgado comprises four self-contained two room, en-suite apartments and a twin en-suite room downstairs. All apartments have a kitchen area and the centre apartment has its own balcony. Each also contains a sofa bed for a child.

The large double doors from Calle San Sebastián open into a vestibule with a separate staircase for two of the apartments.

El Antiguo Juzgado sleeps 10 to 12 people and is ideal for three or four couples, one or two families or a group of friends who would like a shared holiday.

Children are welcome: they have a bedroom and a play room to themselves.

Off the central patio is the spacious salon/music room with wood-burning stove,  sofas,  grand piano,  and CD cabinet and hi-fi system. This is probably the most exquisite room in the house with original vaulted 18th century ceilings (pictures l. and c.). Linked to this is the smaller and cosy television/library room fully equipped with Video/DVD/ TV facilities (picture r.).

What was once the chapel now functions as an office with full broadband connection;  it also houses an upright piano, drum kit, guitar and various other instruments.

The central patio, in the old Moorish courtyard style, contains tables for outside dining and the original well (lit up at night) from which water is drawn.

The communal kitchen overlooks the central patio and is fully equipped including a wood burning stove.

Then there’s the magnificent secluded pool, in its own courtyard, plus barbecue facilities and bar. Definitely the place to hang out at in the summer.

El Antiguo Juzgado is a family home offering a warm welcome to Jimena with a range of equipment that can be borrowed to enhance your holiday, ranging from buckets and spades and paddling pools for children, to a complete climbing kit for the fit and adventurous. There are various sizes of tents, sleeping bags and other camping gear if you want a night on the beach. There are also four Yoga mats, a blow up children’s’ boat, as well as a two-man adult canoe with paddles. The Mediterranean coast is forty minutes away and the Atlantic one hour fifteen minutes, both affording magnificent beaches.

Monica and Peter Becko are both musicians who love Spain, their home and the outdoors. The environs of Jimena offer walking, climbing, bird-watching, river-swimming, trekking and horse-riding besides wonderful restaurants all within walking distance of the house, which sits on the only pedestrianized street in the village. A warm welcome awaits you…

La Casa Grande

BANNER AD

Now under new management, this large, ancient house was converted into the most charming of places to stay; Casa Grande means Big House in Spanish. With plenty of space and corners to explore, including a reading room at the top of the building, quiet indoor courtyards and a summer terrace, this posada (inn) is at the very top of the village. Close to the great outdoors but also to shops, bars and restaurants with a distinctive Spanish flavour.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, so all you have to do is see these to get a feel for this little paradise on the edge of Jimena. What you won’t get is the song of birds, the air blowing softly through the trees, the distant sound of bells or the sense of relaxation that comes with all of the above.

EL ANÓN, THE PLACE TO STAY IN JIMENA

Founded over thirty years ago and built out of six houses in the centre of old Jimena, this is a charming bijoux hotel with only 12 rooms, a series of outdoor terraces, a bar that is well worth exploring, and a swimming pool among the rooftops!

Every nook and cranny of this charming place has a story. Whether you’re taking a short break or a longer stay, you will be enchanted by it. But El Anón is also Jimena’s meeting place. The welcoming bar is an experience not to be missed as a prelude to a meal at one of the area’s best restaurants, where you can choose from a selective menu that includes Moroccan, Spanish, English and international influences, as do the bar snacks.

Over the years Hostal El Anón has garnered an excellent reputation as the place to stay in Jimena, and for very good reason.
