MINGO

Heard from a very pleased customer as she was leaving Mingo:

‘This is the kind of place

you keep coming back to.’

Laurent and Mirella will be delighted to see you.

Laurent is a chef with long experience. He started his training at Lalouvierre, in Belgium, and has worked in a variety of restaurants there, as well as in Leeds, Belfast, Melbourne, Greece and the Caribbean. Mirella, a Dubliner by birth, has plenty of experience in the trade. She trained in Dublin and has moved about almost as much as Laurent.

At the bar, you can try a large variety of imported beers – mostly from Belgium, of course. This is one of the village’s best stocked bars,  catering as much to an international as a local clientele.

or better still, pop in and have a look yourself!

Everything’s on a board, in English and Spanish, from the Menu of the Day (only €8.50) to the interesting wine list.

All the food served at MINGO is prepared on the premises, even the delicious bread, out of locally sourced products and produce. The menu is changed every month and vegetarian options are always included (vegans are happily catered for with a little notice – Reservations: 622 326 222). Just check the boards to find out what’s happening today. Sunday is a special day, of course, so MINGO offers a choice of a full 3-course meal (€14.50), or just the main dish (€9.50).

EL ANON

EL ANÓN, THE PLACE TO STAY IN JIMENA

Founded over thirty years ago and built out of six houses in the centre of old Jimena, this is a charming bijoux hotel with only 12 rooms, a series of outdoor terraces, a bar that is well worth exploring, and a swimming pool among the rooftops!

Every nook and cranny of this charming place has a story. Whether you’re taking a short break or a longer stay, you will be enchanted by it. But El Anón is also Jimena’s meeting place. The welcoming bar is an experience not to be missed as a prelude to a meal at one of the area’s best restaurants, where you can choose from a selective menu that includes Moroccan, Spanish, English and international influences, as do the bar snacks.

Over the years Hostal El Anón has garnered an excellent reputation as the place to stay in Jimena, and for very good reason.

LA ESTACIÓN (SAN PABLO)

NEW LOGO

THE RAILWAY STATION IN SAN PABLO
TerrazaAndén terraza-1

Yes, it’s true! This unique restaurant is one of the most charming in the area. And the food is excellent, too! It is a special experience well worth trying.

PICT0065 PICT0068

Nieves Rodríguez and her son Samuel transformed what was once a fully-fledged railway station built in the 19th century, and still is a request stop, into this charming restaurant full of character and detail. But one goes there for the food. It is difficult to recommend any particular dish as we have yet to try something we didn’t like. It is a good idea to book ahead, especially on weekends, but a sunny weekday lunch on the platform with trains whizzing by every so often is a fun, delicious experience. Nieves has excellent English, too.

LA TASCA

copy-of-logotasca-2.jpg

img_5913.jpg
Located right next to Plaza de la Constitución, LA TASCA is one of Jimena’s well-established bar-restaurants. Pepe and Victoria’s ample dining room offers good, professional service and an international menu.
img_5915.jpg
Drinks and tapas are available at the bar, while seating outside is de rigeur in the long summer evenings. The extensive menu at La Tasca includes a wide selection of fish, salads, meats, omelets and house specialties. You can ask for the day’s specials for further choice. The wine list is a pretty comprehensive selection of traditional Spanish wines, while the desserts are home-made and the perfect way to round off a meal. They will also do meals to take away, and a good idea is to order a paella ahead of time when catering for your guests.

La Tasca also arranges special occasion events on the premises, offering a highly professional service for dinners, lunches, cocktail parties or buffets, at competitive rates.

BAR-RESTAURANTE MESILLA DE LOS ÁNGELES

Terraza2a Interior1a

Indoors or out, you will enjoy the friendly atmosphere and home-style cooking at ‘Troyano’, as they have been known for a very long time. They changed the name a coupleof years ago, but because they’re so well known, they’re still called by their old name.

TerrazaCubierta

Starting on the first weekend of July, you really must try their BBQs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, under the cool vine on this lovely terrace – that’s the BBQ at the end there.

MESILLA LOS ÁNGELES, with a lovely bar serving tapas and breakfasts, started out as a venta on the outskirts of Estación. It is now a fully-fledged restaurant offering good food at reasonable prices (their Menú del Día costs €8). They specialise in t-bone steaks, lamb stew and home-made desserts.

BAR-RESTAURANTE CACHOLLA

ON THE MAIN ROAD IN SAN PABLO
The downstairs dining room is often full, especially on Sundays,

so the next option is to take a seat in the ample dining room upstairs.

One of many specialties here is fresh fish and seafood,
though they also make a mean leg of lamb, among a good selection of meats, including beef, chicken and pork.

This is one of those places it is a pleasure to visit for a great meal at very reasonable prices, professionally served and cooked. And they’ll remember you when you come back as often as you like.
